Affectionately known industry-wide as “AnuTheGiant” (a testament of both his physical stature and place in the music game) Anu Sun is a musical force to be reckoned with! Aside from being a staple of New York City’s live music scene, Anu’s music credits are huge!
Topping his plethora of credits, Anu has worked of the projects of music legends Johnny Cash and Miles Davis. His contributions also include work on the Grammy Award winning motion picture soundtrack for “Miles Ahead” (the Don Cheadle’s Miles Davis doc flick) and work on most of production partner Robert Glasper’s albums to date. Anu has also worked intimately with jazz and R&B staples like Bilal, Ledisi, Laura Mvula and more, assisting in their meteoric rise.
Now, however, is the distinct moment that Anu steps out with his first project in 8 years, a move that is certain to place him with his peers as a more prominent, provocative renaissance musician.
On February 8th, 2019 Anu released “Sanguine Regum,” a genre-merging album that seamlessly melds Hip-Hop, Rock, R&B and Jazz into a single composition. In speaking on the release of Sanguine Regum Anu says “after supporting so many for so long, it was time for me to take a moment to express my voice.” When asked to describe the project he said:
“Its progressive adult contemporary music, the maturation of Hip-Hop and jazz. If we are making honest Hip-Hop for our generation, then I think this is where we should be! It’s the elevated place where the Jazz samples used in classic 90’s Hip Hop are played by real musicians over a DILLAiberate palate.”-Anu Sun
Beyond the audio, Sanguine Regum has a distinct socio-political slant that is largely absent in modern scene. On “KAEPtain America,” Anu addresses the present quandary with America and controversial football star-turned activist Colin Kaepernick. “Why must you hate and degrade us / Try all you want, you can’t wreck us,” Anu raps with conviction. “No Sun” offers a melodic, inspirational sonic backdrop – chock-full of live flutes and trumpets – as Anu speaks about the human condition of people of color. “I have the messages of legends like Public Enemy and the Tribe Called Quest mixed in with the music,” he boasts. But, Sanguine Regum isn’t just weighty themes. Anu Sun rejoins with friend Robert Glasper and reconstructs the Jodeci’s classic “Feenin” with country music duo The Van Lears.
As a native of Las Vegas Nevada, Anu’s musical talent was groomed in a family full of music, fashion and cultural purveyors. How full, you ask? Well… For starters, his godfather is legendary Jazz vibraphonist/drummer Lionel Hampton. “It’s in my DNA” says Anu proudly. “That rich upbringing engrained a heightened sense of the arts, culture and community that I hold dear and practice to this day.”
Anu, like his mentors, continues to give back selflessly to the music community in New York City as the founder of The Shed Open Jam. The event – a seven-year-and-running series – is a top jam session in New York City. The Shed has garnered a reputation as the hang-out for the hottest musicians and launch pad for emerging talent. Some even venture to say it’s the underground “Showtime At The Apollo.“ I started The Shed to find the best up-and-coming talent to feature in my band and recording projects,” he admitted, “But, I also used it as a platform to find talents I wanted to hear beyond the radio. Shed supporters call it music church, hahaha.”
When asked to give an overview of the message of latest project, Anu said:
“Sanguine Regum is a very distinct and purposeful work. The project (which name means “blood of kings” in Latin) is sort of a state of the state message of the African American , the scrubbing of a sore we need to rip the scab off of. It’s a documentary of a regal people (with a history spanning far beyond the slave experience) being forced into a condition wherein they have to constantly exercise tenacity and perseverance in defiance the target placed upon their heads. It’s the perfect coronation of an enduring people.”-Anu Sun
