The final night of the 20th Annual San Francisco Electronic Music Festival presents an evening of performances by electronic pioneer and “king of sampling” Carl Stone, virtuosic bassoonist working with electronics Dana Jessen, and Swedish multi-voiced performance artist Svenska Elektriska Operaensemblen.
A pioneer of live computer music, Carl Stone has been hailed by the Village Voice as “the king of sampling” and “one of the best composers living in (the USA) today.” Carl studied composition at the California Institute of the Arts with Morton Subotnick and James Tenney and has composed electro-acoustic music since 1972, using computers in live performance since 1986.
Praised for her diverse talents, bassoonist Dana Jessen is active as a soloist, improviser, chamber musician, and new music specialist. Dana is the co-founder of Splinter Reeds, a San Francisco-based reed quintet, and has performed with the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, Alarm Will Sound, Amsterdam’s DOEK Collective, and Anthony Braxton’s Tri-Centric Orchestra, among others.
Svenska Elektriska Operaensemblen, is a singer, composer, and performance artist whose work combines acoustic and electronic sounds with live interactive video. Performances often explore the fourth wall, playing with the boundaries between artist and audience. SEO has performed throughout Europe, Asia, and North America and received commissions from Swedish Radio, Norrlandsoperan and Folkoperan.
The San Francisco Electronic Music Festival is an artist-run organization founded in 1999 by eight local sound artists and musicians. Since the first festival in 2000, SFEMF has presented works that span the sonic spectra from ambient to rhythmic and atonal to melodic by participants ranging from new and emerging young artists to respected pioneers of the electronic music field.
