Urban Alternative, Peter Hadar, Hip Hop is Green

On Monday, to cap off Black Music Month, The Recording Academy’s LA Chapter Presented “Urban Alternative Music: A Global Movement”, an event which had panelists Vikter Duplaix, Sy Smith, Garth Trinidad and select industry professionals. Much was discussed to a full house, including the ever-argued point about the term “Neo-Soul”. The verdict was namely that the term is sometimes OK but Urban Alternative (i.e. Music of the African Diaspora) is good, a term The Academy has used since 2003 since giving awards to Outkast, Lupe Fiasco, India.Irie, Damian Marley, Jill Scott and Gnarls Barkley.
