53rd Annual GRAMMYS | Surprises, Snubs, Dopeness & Disappointments

The 53rd Annual GRAMMYS turned out to be quite surprising in many ways. Esperanza Spalding, who won for best new artist, is being threatened by Justin Bieber fans over her win – she beat Drake out too – shocking for sure, although she is a great talent.

We loved Janelle Monae, BoB & Bruno Mars performance and the Muppets with Cee-lo (and his crazy costume) with mixed reaction about Gwyneth Paltrow heard from across our office.

DOPENESS:

The Roots & John Legend winning 3 GRAMMYs (yes!), Herbie Hancock, beat out the likes of Eminem, Elton John, Leon Russell, Lady Gaga and Beyonce for best pop collaboration with vocals and the Stanley Clarke Band winning for best contemporary jazz album.

We loved that Sade won for best R&B performance by a duo or group and Fantasia won best female R&B vocal performance. Empire State of Mind (Jay-Z and Alicia Keys) won for best rap/sung collaboration and best rap song.

The Aretha Franklin tribute by Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson + the Machine’s Florence Welch, Martina McBride and Yolanda Adams was amazing and Aretha herself looked great!

DISAPPOINTMENTS:

Teddy Pendergrass Tribute done by Lady Antebellumreally? C’mon Son.

Guru was snubbed!!  The Gangstarr MC was not included in the award show’s memorial montage of recording artists who passed away during the previous year.

DC Artists were snubbed: Chuck Brown, Carolyn Malachi, Raheem DeVaughn, and BT all are going home without a win.
