Born in France to Chilean parents in political exile during Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship in Chile, Ana Tijoux’s political perspective was shaped from birth. After returning to Chile in the 90s, she cut her teeth in the country’s hip-hop underground with the politically conscious rap group Mazika, and later, as a featured artist with Control Machete. But she’s never been limited to one genre, evidenced by her work with the funk bands Las Tetas and Aluzinati, as well as her collaborations with pop singer Julieta Venegas. She also won a Latin Grammy for “Universos Paralelos,” her duet with Jorge Drexler. But she’s perhaps best known in the States for her return-to-rap album 1977, which garnered her international exposure in videogames (FIFA 11) and American television (Breaking Bad). She’s joined by Meridian Brothers, an electronic rock band from Bogotá, Colombia, that experiments with Latin American rhythms and styles; and Bembona, a Puerto Rican-Panamanian DJ whose practice empowers the Latinx community, on the decks to get the show started.
