Her mother, Carline Ray, was a pioneering vocalist and multi-instrumentalist who performed with the International Sweethearts of Rhythm and held degrees from both Juilliard and the Manhattan School of Music. Immersed in this vibrant musical environment, Russell developed a profound appreciation for jazz and blues from an early age.

Before launching her solo career in 2006, Russell amassed extensive experience as a backing vocalist and multi-instrumentalist. She toured and recorded with a diverse array of artists, including David Bowie, Steely Dan, Paul Simon, Cyndi Lauper, Jackson Browne, and Rosanne Cash. Her collaborations spanned over 200 albums, showcasing her versatility across genres.
