Charles Lloyd and tabla legend Zakir Hussain have been scaling the highest creative peaks together for some two decades, an extraordinary communion introduced to the world on the 2006 live album Sangam (with former SFJAZZ Collective drummer Eric Harland completing the trio).

A Miner Auditorium mainstay since the SFJAZZ Center opened in 2013, Hussain inspires Lloyd’s most expansive music making, with a Technicolor palette that can include tenor and alto saxophones, bass and alto flutes, piano, percussion, and the keening Hungarian tarogato woodwind. With Lloyd, Hussain augments his tabla virtuosity with Carnatic mouth percussion konnakol, making each encounter a revelatory experience.

Part of Lloyd’s Kindred Spirits confederation, Chicago-reared guitarist Marvin Sewell is a recent addition to the spiritually-steeped tandem with Hussain. He’s performed and recorded widely with Cassandra Wilson, Lizz Wright, and Jason Moran, and his earthy aesthetic and stinging lines bring out the grit that Lloyd acquired as a teenager in Memphis performing with blues artists Howlin’ Wolf, Bobby “Blue” Bland, and B.B. King (not to mention the supremely soulful Cannonball Adderley a few years later).
