Funmi Ononaiye, a cherished and multifaceted presence in the music world, passed away on December 18, 2023, at Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York City. As noted by New Amsterdam News, “Funmi Ononaiye, the regal, omnipresent music connoisseur, who was an inspiring ray of light in his capacities as A&R director, event producer, artist manager, performing musician, and mentor to many people… was a longstanding member of Jazz at Lincoln Center as an advocate, and later served as programming manager at Dizzy’s Club.” Known for his infectious laughter and unwavering spirit, Funmi was more than a DJ and a friend—he was a beacon of joy and inspiration. Tonight, we celebrate his vibrant legacy through music, song, dance, and drum, honoring the spirit he so generously shared with us all.
