Lucia Sarmiento is a Saxophone player, Composer, and Educator based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her music is the expression of a diverse musical upbringing: the integration of jazz, funk, pop and latin american rhythms fused with her own sensibility for angular, yet beautiful melodies. In her debut album “Escape” (Spring 2024), Lucia leads a synth-heavy jazz quintet with the tenor saxophone. Additionally, she introduces delicate vocal arrangements, a flute choir and the EWI, like sprinkles of textures and colors in her playful jazz compositions.

Born and raised in Lima, Peru, Lucia grew up studying artists like John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Chris Potter and Andres Prado. In 2013, a Saxophone Performance brought her to Minneapolis Minnesota, where she has been an active member of the music scene ever since. She has collaborated with esteemed jazz artists such as Chad Lefkovitz-Brown, Arturo Sandoval, Melissa Aldana, Randy Brecker, Bob Mintzer, Kurt Elling, Grace Kelly, Antwaun Stanley, Ella Briceno, among others.

Directed by piano player Adrian Ruiz and guitar player José Guzmán, La Cantera is SRBCC’s Afro-Caribbean Jazz performance ensemble for youth (ages 19-24). The program was born at Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center in 2018 and is known forincorporating young veterans of Ruiz Belvis’ Afro-Caribbean Jazz and Afro-Latin Percussion apprenticeships with guest appearances by the city’s top local and touring Latin music talent. Through a dynamic schedule participants engage in the business of musical performance, learning to leverage their talents and exposure.
