Honduran-born pianist Oscar Rossignoli folds many traditions into his music, from his classical music formation to his passion for Latin and North American jazz. He’s currently based in New Orleans and works with some of the city’s best jazz musicians, including John Boutté, Jason Marsalis, Gladney, Amina Scott, Yusa and more. He has also established his reputation in various bands, including the EXTENDED trio with Matt Booth and Brad Webb, and by leading his own quartet and trio. Oscar earned a Master’s degree at the University of New Orleans, where he was named the 2015–2016 ASCAP Louis Armstrong Scholar and was a finalist in the 2018 Ellis Marsalis International Jazz Piano Competition.
Tonight, Oscar plays a tribute to the legendary Thelonious Monk. Thelonious Monk (1917–1982) was an influential American jazz pianist and composer, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of modern jazz. Known for his highly original playing style—marked by angular melodies, unexpected pauses, percussive touch, and complex harmonies—Monk helped shape the bebop movement alongside artists like Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. He composed many jazz standards, including “Round Midnight,” “Blue Monk,” and “Straight, No Chaser,” which continue to be widely performed today. Though his unconventional approach initially puzzled some audiences, Monk’s genius and innovation eventually earned him critical acclaim, securing his legacy as one of the most distinctive and important figures in jazz history.
