Led by the nephews of the late Qawwali singing legend Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Rizwan-Muazzam Qawwali continues their uncle’s pioneering efforts to transcend cultural, language and religious barriers and bring the vibrant Qawwali vocal music of the Sufi mystics to the world. Grandsons of Ali Khan’s teacher and mentored by their uncle, the Pakistani-born brothers Rizwan and Muazzam Mujahid Ali Khan now stand as torchbearers for this sacred musical expression of South Asia – a tradition of Islamic devotional music dating back to the 13th century.
Performing with a virtuosic approach marked by soaring improvisational flights and breathless synchronized passages in multiple languages including Punjabi, Persian, and Urdu, the group performed their first major concert at Reading, England’s WOMAD festival in 1998 and have been regular performers at the vaunted European and Australian world music festivals for over 25 years.
The group has recorded several universally acclaimed albums for Peter Gabriel’s Real World Records as well as the Narada and Tabaruk label, each focused on original compositions, traditional works, and the music of their iconic uncle.
Accompanied by an ensemble of voices, harmonium, and tabla, the brothers bring a singular power to their live performances that takes audiences on an emotional journey like no other.
