New Orleans native, Roger Lewis began his journey with the saxophone at the age of 7. He later became a founding member of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, which formed in 1977. Lewis has spent decades seeing the world while on tour. The band has recorded songs with stars Elvis Costello, Dizzy Gillespie, DJ Logic and Norah Jones. They have toured with The Black Crowes and opened up for Miles Davis. When the band played an NPR Tiny Desk Concert, the series founder, Bob Boilen, described them as “an abundance of euphoria.”
Lewis would go on to release his first solo album, Finally Alright! the summer of his 80th birthday,
Lewis has had a long history in New Orleans as well as an indelible effect on the city’s Jazz and live music scene. Along with playing with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Roger has played in Fats Domino’s band and is a regular member of the legendary Tremé Brass Band and Delfeayo Marsalis’ Uptown Jazz Orchestra.
