On September 28, at 10:03 PM, 34-year-old Brandon Lopez, was killed by Anaheim Police while having a mental health crisis. He remained in his car unarmed, afraid of stepping out of his vehicle, while Santa Ana Police Officers pointed their guns at him. Within 23 mins of arriving at the scene, Anaheim Police fired tear gas into the car, forcing Brandon to exit the vehicle. As he was running toward his mother, children and family members, who were all present, Anaheim Police fired 22 shots killing Brandon instantly. He had no weapon on him and no gun was found at the scene. Santa Ana Councilman, Jonathan Ryan Hernandez, is Lopez’s first cousin and was also present at the scene pleading with law enforcement to allow him to intervene as a trained mental health professional.⁠

This event will share space with the families of Rodney King and George Floyd who will be in attendance. Other activities include the unveiling of a mural honoring Brandon Lopez and George Floyd by Fernando the Artist, a Grotto placed on the memorial site, resources and information from community outreach organizations and a selection of Vegan, Latinx and Soul Food vendors.⁠
