The Brooklyn-based composer, dhol player, drummer, and leader of Red Baraat performs with his project Wild Wild East, bringing the raucous and groove-heavy music from his 2019 Smithsonian Folkways album and more.

“A global musical alchemist and cultural agent provocateur” (Songlines), Sunny Jain has built a career on confounding expectations and restless exploration, from his work as drummer with Pakistani rock kings Junoon to his varied efforts as an Indo-jazz musician, dhol virtuoso, author, composer, producer, and bandleader.

Formed in 2008 as a band to play at his wedding, Red Baraat has become a global sensation for its mix of brass band attitude, go-go and funk inflected rhythms, and infectious bhangra dance uplift.

With Wild Wild East, the New York-born Jain has created a project that is as powerful, wildly diverse, and thought-provoking as its inspiration — the idea that it is the immigrant population of our country that best expresses the bedrock concept of the American spirit of bravery, sacrifice, and blazing new trails to a better life. Wild Wild East is, like America itself, a mashup of cultures and expressions. Bollywood classics and Spaghetti Westerns, Indian folk traditions, jazz improvisation, and rollicking psychedelic and surf guitar styles are all ingredients in this spicy and satisfying blend.
