The Hood Needs House represents more than just a party – it’s a testament to house music’s power to unite, heal, and transform communities. Born from personal tragedy and reborn through Detroit’s rich musical heritage, this event continues the legacy of using electronic music as a force for positive change.
In 2009, a Brooklyn block party turned tragic when Kweku Saunderson lost two dear friends, plunging him into a deep depression. His father, fearing for his well-being, sent his music to his uncle, Kevin Saunderson—one of the pioneers of techno—who invited him to Michigan to learn Detroit techno. After two transformative years touring Europe with his uncle, Kweku emerged enlightened and happy. Back in Brooklyn, Kweku saw the same violence and realized the hood needed the love and energy he had experienced. This vision birthed “The Hood Needs House”- symbolic for love, in 2015. By 2018, Kweku introduced it to the hood via merchandise, music, and parties, spreading house music’s transformative power. He organized parties and brought unity to his community, proving that light and love could prevail even in the darkest places—a movement, a new context, and a culture.
