Sonic Sanctuary: The Luminous Darkness

A concert by Tyrone Birkett | Emancipation

The Community Arts Program is proud to host the SONIC SANCTUARY Series; an in-depth presentation of the work of Artist-in-Residence Tyrone Birkett (Saxophone) and his Emancipation jazz ensemble. These cultural conversations include an artist led Q&A for attendees to connect the dots between the music and its context.

“Through the lens of mystic and theologian Howard Thurman the event is themed on his principle of seeing hope in the darkness during tumultuous times. Art that impacts the audience’s consciousness toward a revival of compassion, hope and freedom is necessary.”

Tyrone Birkett | Emancipation have performed at the Apollo Theater, Symphony Space, Storm King Arts Center, Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Center, Schomburg Center for Black Culture, Historic Mother Bethel AME Church, Blue Note Jazz Club, Harlem Arts Festival, and the United Nations.

The concert is 90 minutes with a brief intermission.
