Legendary label VP Records has been a bastion of Jamaican music in New York City since its founding in 1977. This Central Park party showcases the intersection of dancehall and hip-hop in the 1990s—a sweet spot for the Jamaican artist Wayne Wonder, whose honeyed vocals and talent for interpretation helped establish him as a hitmaker with songs for both the lovers and the streets since the late 80s. He made his name covering the work of American artists including Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car,” PM Dawn’s “Die Without You” and En Vogue’s “Hold On,” but branched out to recording original works in the early 90s. He’s worked with such producers as King Tubby, Dave Kelly, Steve “Lenky” Marsden, Bobby Digital, Sly and Robbie, and even No Doubt’s Tony Kanal, who produced his cover of the Thompson Twins’ “Hold Me Now” for the soundtrack of the 2004 Adam Sandler/Drew Barrymore rom-com 50 First Dates.
