As part of our season-long partnership, independent performing arts organization Works & Process presents three local dance organizations focused on sharing and celebrating the city’s dance traditions. Showtime NYC! is one of the largest street dance programs and local companies, offering performance and professional development opportunities for street and subway dancers. Founded by the nonprofit Dancing in the Streets, the program has commissioned works from international stars such as Faustin Linyekula, Anne Nguyen, and Adesola Osakalumi. The Maimouna Keita Dance Company—named after Bambara singer and dancer Maimouna Keita and led by her granddaughter, Artistic Director Marie Basse-Wiles—celebrates the art and rich heritage of Africa and its diaspora through extensive classes and performances, as well as an annual conference that hosts dance, music, and cultural workshops helmed by masters from Senegal, Mali, Guinea, and the U.S. Documentarian Kash Gaines debuted “Caged Birds” last year at the Guggenheim, bringing the renegade act of subway dancing to the hallowed halls of fine art, and capturing the feats of athleticism and artistic expression that often come with the risk of confrontation—or incarceration.
