Generations of acclaimed Black poets spanning from the Black Arts Movement’s iconic Sonia Sanchez to today’s Black Lives Matter era Mahogany L. Browne will take the stage at Woodie King, Jr’s New Federal Theatre for She Speaks, He Speaks, Generations Speak: Black Words Matter, a two part virtual poetry jam on Monday September 21 and Monday September 28 streaming at 7P EDT.

It features legendary Black Arts Movement poets who continue to be pivotal in cultural activism — Sonia Sanchez, the prolific poet, activist, author, and professor; Abiodun Oyewole, a poet and teacher and founding member of The Last Poets; Quincy Troupe, poet, professor, author 20 books and the first official Poet Laureate of California and Haki R. Madhubuti, writer, poet, and educator (formerly known as Don L. Lee), author of 24 books and the founder, publisher and chairman of Third World Press.

There will be established poets like Yusef Komunyakaa, a 1994 Pulitzer Prize winning poet and NYU professor, and Jessica Care Moore, a poet, playwright, performance artist and executive producer of Black WOMEN Rock. Also, there’s poet, educator and activist Mahogany L. Browne, the Black Lives Matter program coordinator for Pratt Institute, and Shadenia Sivad, poet and songwriter who infuses hip hop and social justice. Other poets include: Camryn Bruno, Nathaniel Isiah Swanson and Renée McRae. The program is hosted and organized by poet Rev. Rhonda Akanke McLean-Nur and directed by Petronia Paley. There will also be music and dance performances.
