Stop the Violence Virtual Tour 2020

To raise awareness of the impact of gun violence on communities of color and lift up the power of the youth voice as a catalyst for change, Revolve Impact and Community Justice Action Fund (CJAF) launched the #SchoolsNotPrisons: Stop The Violence 2020 Virtual Tour.

For decades, America has been overspending on policing and prisons under the mistaken idea that punishing and incarcerating people is what keeps communities safe. However, mounting research, data and personal stories prove the opposite. #SchoolsNotPrisons has impacted the national narrative on what really keeps communities safe by supporting local advocacy campaigns against the overuse of punishment and incarceration, including addressing such issues as gun violence, harsh school discipline, immigrant and refugee imprisonment, the high cost of prisons, and the impact of incarceration on families.

In partnership with CJAF, a national nonprofit organization founded by Black leaders working to end gun violence in communities of color, the purpose of the tour is to uplift communities most impacted by gun violence and mass incarceration. The tour will raise awareness of local campaigns aimed at investing in alternatives to state violence while encouraging communities to vote in the critical 2020 November elections. The Tour kicked off in Orange County, California in August and includes stops in Houston, Texas; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Chicago, Illinois; and Los Angeles, California.

Why Milwaukee?

Homicides in Milwaukee have reached levels not seen since the 1990’s. 80% of homicides in 2020 are due to shootings, and over 70% of the victims are Black. Milwaukee spends 47% of the city budget on policing and less than 1% on community based violence prevention programs. Police violence in Milwaukee has fueled national protests around the nation, and people across the city – including the Milwaukee Bucks – are calling for meaningful investments in community-based violence and systemic changes to the criminal justice system.

In partnership with Milwaukee Urban League, Milwaukee Office of Violence Prevention, and Voces de la Frontera, we are calling on leaders at the local and state level to stop investing in the crime control approach that has failed to reduce violence in communities across the state and continues to incite police violence and brutality. We call on leaders to reinvest these funds into community-led approaches to address violence statewide, and to take action to protect marginalized communities, and to build healthier neighborhoods. It’s time to listen to the people. It’s time to invest in us.
