Sprite and Genius Celebrate Hip-Hop’s Legacy With The Living Tracklist
Sprite and Genius have teamed up to launch The Living Tracklist, a new campaign celebrating 50 songs that have helped shape hip-hop culture over the past six decades. Rather than ranking the “greatest” records of all time, the initiative invites fans to explore the songs that changed music, influenced generations, and continue to spark conversation.
Developed in partnership with Genius, the campaign combines limited-edition Sprite packaging, exclusive editorial content, an immersive digital experience, and a panel discussion featuring respected voices from across hip-hop culture.
A Living Conversation, Not a Definitive List
One of the campaign’s defining ideas is that hip-hop history should remain open to discussion.
“The Living Tracklist is framed as a celebration of influence rather than a ranked greatest songs list,” says Rob Markman, Vice President of Music & Content at Genius and one of the campaign’s Cultural Authority Panel members.
“A greatest songs list feels definitive. The Living Tracklist feels like a living and breathing conversation. It feels more inclusive and better suited for discussion about the brilliance of hip-hop culture.”
That philosophy guided the project from the beginning, encouraging fans to debate, revisit classics, and contribute their own perspectives both online and in everyday conversations.
Beyond Sales and Chart Positions
The panel emphasized that cultural impact extends well beyond commercial success.
Markman points to Queen Latifah’s “U.N.I.T.Y.” and Clipse’s “Grindin'” as examples of songs whose influence cannot be measured solely by Billboard rankings.
Whether inspiring generations of women in hip-hop or becoming an unforgettable soundtrack to school lunchroom beat-making, these records continue to resonate decades after their release.
Genius Adds Context Behind the Music
As the world’s leading destination for lyrics and music knowledge, Genius brings historical context to each selection.
Markman explains that songs like Black Star’s “Definition” carried enormous emotional weight following the deaths of Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G., reminding listeners how music often helps communities process pivotal cultural moments.
The campaign encourages both longtime fans and newer generations to explore not only the songs themselves, but also the stories behind them.
A Cross-Generational Cultural Authority Panel
To help frame the discussion, Sprite and Genius assembled a panel of respected journalists, broadcasters, and cultural voices including:
Angie Martinez
Speedy Morman
Scottie Beam
Nyla Symone
Rob Markman
Josh Peas
Frazier Tharpe
Their full-length conversation explores everything from socially conscious rap and women in hip-hop to regional influence and the evolution of internet-era artists.
One particularly spirited debate centered around Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five’s “The Message,” examining how foundational records continue influencing today’s music through sampling and cultural DNA.
Hip-Hop Lives on Sprite Packaging
The campaign also arrives on store shelves through 26 limited-edition Sprite and Sprite Zero Sugar designs inspired by influential lyrics spanning multiple eras.
Featured songs include:
“Rapper’s Delight”
“The Payback”
“C.R.E.A.M.”
“California Love”
“Big Poppa”
“Grindin'”
“Country Grammar”
“Crank That”
“Bodak Yellow”
“TGIF”
Each package celebrates the artistry and evolution of hip-hop while connecting fans to additional digital experiences through QR codes.
The Conversation Continues
At the center of The Living Tracklist is participation.
Rather than presenting the final word on hip-hop history, Sprite and Genius invite fans to weigh in with the records they believe changed the culture and shaped future generations.
As Markman explains:
“What songs on the Living Tracklist do you identify with the most and why? Which records changed the game? I want to see people speak passionately about the hip-hop they love.”
The Living Tracklist reminds fans that hip-hop’s story is still being written, and everyone has a voice in what comes next.
