Small World Music proudly launches Borderless Jazz, a dynamic new concert series exploring jazz as a music without boundaries. Grounded in improvisation, exchange, and creative freedom, the series celebrates artists who move across genres, traditions, and cultures while expanding the possibilities of jazz.

Borderless Jazz brings together exceptional artists whose work creates new musical conversations and connects audiences with extraordinary live experiences from around the world.

The series begins with Seun Kuti & Egypt 80, bringing the unmistakable power, rhythm, and spirit of Afrobeat to Toronto.

Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 Live

Led by acclaimed Nigerian saxophonist, vocalist, composer, and bandleader Seun Kuti, Egypt 80 delivers a live performance driven by soaring horn arrangements, intricate percussion, hypnotic grooves, and commanding vocals.

The concert will include music from Heavier Yet (Lays the Crownless Head), released in 2024. Executive-produced by Lenny Kravitz and artistically produced by Sodi Marciszewer, the album features Damian Marley on “Dey” and Sampa The Great on “Emi Aluta.”

In 2026, Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 also released “Na Dem,” a collaboration with Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, continuing Seun’s tradition of bringing together influential musical voices across genres and cultures.

Performing with Egypt 80 from childhood, Seun Kuti assumed leadership of the legendary ensemble following the death of his father, Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, in 1997. Over nearly three decades, Seun has established his own international career through acclaimed recordings, global touring, and collaborations with artists including Lenny Kravitz, Damian Marley, Sampa The Great, Tom Morello, Carlos Santana, Brian Eno, and John Reynolds.

Rooted in the cultural and political life of Lagos, Afrobeat draws together Yoruba rhythmic traditions with jazz, funk, soul, and highlife to create music that is rhythmically rich, emotionally powerful, and deeply engaging. Layer by layer, the music unfolds through an ongoing conversation between horns, guitars, percussion, keyboards, and voices, building an atmosphere that invites audiences to listen, move, and become part of the experience.

Its power comes from repetition and accumulation. A groove may continue for several minutes while voices, horns, guitars, and percussion enter, withdraw, and return. What begins as a rhythmic pattern develops into a larger conversation across the band. The call-and-response vocals also connect the stage to the room.
