808 Day 2026: Roland Honors the Drum Machine That Redefined Modern Music
Roland celebrates 808 Day 2026 with a new NTS Radio series, the return of The Rhythm Creators featuring Mannie Fresh, and a limited-time TR-808 software offer.
Roland Corporation celebrates the legendary TR-808 Rhythm Composer with another installment of 808 Day. Since its debut in 1980, the drum machine commonly known as “the 808” has provided the sonic backbone for hip-hop, house, techno, trap, bounce music, and countless sounds that followed.
For 808 Day 2026, Roland has partnered with global radio platform NTS for a new three-part series and revived its award-winning animated series, The Rhythm Creators, with a new episode featuring New Orleans producer Mannie Fresh.
The Future Is Still 808
Roland and NTS have joined forces for The Future Is Still 808, a three-part radio series tracing the TR-808’s influence across generations, genres, and cultures.
Hosted by NTS resident and musical artist Shy One and produced by award-winning documentarian Nick Dwyer, the series follows the 808 from its origins in Japan to the dance floors, studios, and bedrooms where musicians repeatedly dismantled, reinvented, and transformed its sound.
The series explores the drum machine’s role in the birth of house music in Chicago, the rise of techno in Detroit, and the development of new musical scenes throughout Asia, Europe, South America, and beyond.
Episodes air live on NTS on August 8, August 11, and August 22, 2026. All three episodes will also be available to stream following the final broadcast.

Each episode includes a recurring “Happy Accidents” segment that breaks down the stories behind some of the TR-808’s most recognizable sounds, including its distinctive cowbell and bass drum.
The third and final episode turns toward the future, examining how the 808’s sounds escaped the original machine and took on lives of their own through sampling, chopping, pitching, and digital reinterpretation. Those sounds continue to resurface in new genres and inspire new generations of artists and producers.

The Rhythm Creators Returns With Mannie Fresh
Following Silver and Bronze Telly Award wins, Roland has brought back The Rhythm Creators animated series for a new installment featuring New Orleans hip-hop and bounce music pioneer Mannie Fresh.
Best known as one-half of Cash Money Records’ in-house production team, Mannie Fresh helped create defining records including Juvenile’s “Back That Azz Up” and Big Tymers’ “Get Your Roll On.”
The new episode combines humor, reverence, and nostalgia through stylized animation by Detroit artist Vaughn Taormina, accompanied by narration from Mannie Fresh.
Previous installments of The Rhythm Creators have featured Egyptian Lover, Fatboy Slim, Prince Paul, Jazzy B, Orbital, and KiNK.
