New Album from Black Nile “The Further Side”
Brothers Lawrence and Aaron Shaw push into new territories with The Further Side, a captivating showcase of their ever-evolving sound and post-genre sensibilities. Their sophomore album employs a new sonic palette that’s more beat-driven and focused on semantic elements, with room for features by rappers Tru and Wise.
The Further Side is a totally different direction allowing Black Nile to never be stagnant in their music. Initially, the album started as a mixtape before blossoming into something greater—something further; with music that allowed them to delve into spatial frequencies that people have not experienced themselves yet.
The album doesn’t just venture into new spatial frequencies, it also explores Los Angeles—from the “Jet Lag” of LAX to the saxophone slide of “Sunset Drive.” A breathy ballad transforms into a wildly shaking, tribal rock experiment in “Gumbo, First Serving.” “Second Serving” reflects the R&B and hip hop roots of the two musicians, an unrolling amalgamation of keys, horns, piano, and shushing percussion that grabs you as it slowly shimmers into place.
Leimert Park’s Tru joins the brothers on “Crenshaw” for a roll through South Central, meeting at the hazy intersection of beat music, jazz, and lo-fi hip hop. Wise picks it up in “Inglewood,” a humorous slice-of-life with Cali sunshine and Los Angeles grit, complete with gunshots and ghetto birds. “NoBrainer” feels dreamier and light, a float-through jam that sparkles from within—and sends off the album with a feel-good flow.
Every moment feels new in The Further Side; every transition delivers a sense of discovery. It’s not just an expansion Black Nile’s sound, it’s a glimpse into the future of jazz.
