Byrd’s Corner Music Review: Flako – Mini Tollbooth E.P.

I have been so obsessed with Flako‘s production ever since I came across one of his beats a couple of years ago. Though the Chilean producer has remixed and produced for several artists over the last couple of years, including Busta Rhymes, Quadron, Dabyre, Robert Koch, Shaunise, Benny Tones, just to name a few, the Mini Tollbooth E.P. (Project Mooncircle) is in fact Flako’s first official solo release.

And it does not disappoint. Flako definitely loves his heavy drums but his main ingredient is melody and that fact is clear throughout these 6 tracks. But don’t let the short length fool you, Mini Tollbooth is sufficiently layered and complex and illuminates Flako’s full range and mastery of production.

His musical sophistication allows him to seamlessly flow from pretty orchestration to dirty beats with the utmost precision. As us beat lovers like to say, he’s a beast…And if that doesn’t intrigue you, Project Mooncircle just announced Flako’s first full length will be a double disc/2LP called “The Mesektet” and is due to drop soon. In ancient Kemet (Egypt) ‘Mesektet’ is one of two solar boats used by the sun god ‘Ra’ to travel through the cycle of night and day and carry the moon across the sky.

It is told that he died every dusk, had to fight the dark forces of the underworld and bring light to the dead souls as he passed through, just to be reborn in the morning. Like I said, sophisticated. I think you’ll be hearing a lot from him for years to come.
