Out now via Ropeadope Records
Earlier this year, singer / songwriter C R O W N made her solo artist debut with acclaimed EP ‘Epicene,’ which comes at the culmination of years of behind the scenes work within the music industry. Now boasting a resume that includes creative consulting to artists including five-time Grammy winner Lalah Hathaway and Jaimeo Brown, C R O W N is now revealing her debut album- Unlearning.
Out now via Ropeadope Records, Unlearning is a deeply personal undertaking for C R O W N as she explores unspoken truths on womxn’s experiences. Introduced with lead single “Shit To Do,” an anthemic call to action inspired by “fuckboys” – from ghosting time-wasters to the patriarchy at large- the single showcases the Neo-soul sound C R O W N conveys for the duration of the full-length LP. Serving to deconstruct traditional songwriting and concepts within her genre, Unlearning explores the taboo nuances of emotions from sex, self-expression, and living and loving in the modern age of digital dating and censorship. Written and performed by C R O W N, the LP contains eight-original singles and features live-band production.
‘She conveys more lofty emotion in just a few lines than many artists can muster over a whole record.’ – Bearded Magazine
‘It’s a sultry neo-soul affair, mottled with red-lit trip-hop synths and distant beats – there’s also a vibrant ’90s streak in her voice, recalling the slick tones of R&B icons… While there are similarities to Stateside acts like Frank Ocean, she carves a niche all her own by implementing the very British stylings of Lamb, Portishead and Massive Attack.’ – The 405
‘it’s ethereal, enticing, engaging and beautiful’ – Flavour Mag
The project follows her May 2019 EP, ‘Epicene’ whose music video for “Womxn’s Way” can be viewed below:
