A masterful pianist and visionary composer, the Canadian-born, New York-based Andy Milne has been a creative force on the scene for three decades — the leader of the influential cosmic funk band Dapp Theory and an artist mentored by the great virtuoso Oscar Peterson whose latest Sunnyside trio album, ThereMission, won the 2021 Juno Award (the Canadian equivalent of the GRAMMYs) for Jazz Album of the Year by a group.

He brings his latest quartet for his SFJAZZ debut as a leader.

A musician at the center of the revolutionary M-BASE Collective in the early 90s, Milne worked with saxophone genius Steve Coleman’s Five Elements for nearly a decade, and founded Dapp Theory in 1998, releasing five exploratory albums to date. He has recorded and performed extensively with Ravi Coltrane and trumpeter Ralph Alessi, and has shared the stage with Andrew Cyrille, Dianne Reeves, Fred Hersch, and Bruce Cockburn, among others.

ThereMission is Milne’s first project since being diagnosed with and recovering from prostate cancer, and its title references his hard fought condition. With its twists, turns, and emotional resonance, the album is a triumphant collection of original works and classics by McCoy Tyner and Benny Golson, tied together by the telepathic communication between Milne and his trio mates, bassist John Hébert and drummer Clarence Penn.
