A co-founder of the legendary Wu-Tang Clan, Raekwon has definitely earned his stripes. He is one of the most consistent MCs to ever emerge from the ubiquitous Staten Island collective, as well as the author of its most iconic solo album, ‘Only Built 4 Cuban Linx’. He’s shared a microphone with everybody from Nas to Kanye West to his brother-from-another, Ghostface Killah. His fierce storytelling and pin sharp snapshots of NYC block life, usually combined with soulful samples and extra-raw drums, have influenced whole generations of street rappers such as Biggie, Pusha T, and Rick Ross. He’s scored various platinum plaques both as a solo artist and a member of the Wu. And – after somewhat 20 years in the game – he’s arguably enjoying more love than ever before in this day and (internet) age. Both the sequel to his über-classic, ‘Cuban Linx II’ (2009), and his ‘Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang’ LP (2011) enjoyed rave critics and unbridled fan love, firmly establishing Rae’s brand new retro sound as a linchpin of today’s musical landscape.
