Gentle Weep was formed in 2023 by three Brazilian musicians living in Canada, united by their passion for the timeless melodies of the past, particularly Brazilian choro, and the traditional rodas, musical gatherings where this music thrives. In a roda, musicians are expected to accompany by ear whatever a singer or soloist throws at them, which involves a lot of improvisation and leaves plenty of room for musical and playful puns. Whether in a ballroom or a jazz club, Gentle Weep evokes the same emotions that are the hallmark of these warm, welcoming gatherings.

The trio consists of three exceptional Brazilian musicians, each with a varied musical background. Matheus Coelho, a gifted multi-instrumentalist, developed a love for both popular and concert music early in life. After gaining experience with local ensembles and big bands, he majored in Music and is now pursuing a PhD in Conducting at the University of Toronto.

Fred Alves is a superb percussionist with a vast array of experience in Brazilian and Latin American rhythms. He has worked professionally with some of Brazil’s most prestigious emerging artists, building a reputation for his skill and versatility.

Fred Barros is a talented bassist and guitarist with extensive experience in playing the 7-string acoustic guitar, the traditional instrument of choro and samba musics. He is also a professor of Musicology and a passionate scholar, currently pursuing a PhD in Ethnomusicology at the University of Toronto.
