For 35 years, Shelter has been a home. It’s been a sanctuary for a community of underground music lovers, born in 1991 from a simple, pure passion shared by Merlin, Freddy (who gave us the name shelter), Timmy. We wanted to fill a void in New York City’s nightlife and create a haven where anyone, from any background, could lose and find themselves in the music.
The name “Shelter” said it all: a place of safety, warmth, and unity. It was never about fame or money. We built it with our own hands, self-funded and independent, driven by the need to give people something real. Every light and every sound was intentional, chasing a feeling of connection where the dance floor became a conversation between the heart and the beat.
The journey over these decades has been transformative. We’ve navigated rising rents, venue changes, profound cultural shifts, and the deep loss of friends who shaped this community. Through every challenge, the music was our constant—a lifeline that kept us grounded.
Shelter has endured for one reason: the people. Our beautiful, diverse family of dancers, artists, and believers, who brought their joy, pain, and energy to the floor week after week, year after year. You are the pulse that keeps this vision alive.
That is why I still do it. Shelter is more than a place; it’s our shared heartbeat. It’s proof that when we come together through music, we find rhythm, connection, and meaning. This is our story—written one beat, one breath, one beautiful moment at a time.
