Steve Turre is one of the world’s most celebrated jazz innovators, renowned as both a master trombonist and the pioneering virtuoso of the seashell. A perennial winner of the DownBeat, JazzTimes, and Jazziz Critics’ and Readers’ Polls, Turre has performed with legends including Ray Charles, Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, Tito Puente, Max Roach, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk, who introduced him to the musical possibilities of the seashell. A longtime member of the Saturday Night Live Band since 1984, Turre blends jazz, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, and blues traditions into a sound that is both deeply rooted and boldly original.
For this special performance, Turre is joined by two of New Orleans’ finest musicians: GRAMMY Award-winning trombonist, composer, and producer Delfeayo Marsalis, and acclaimed drummer, composer, and educator Herlin Riley. Marsalis is one of jazz’s leading composers and producers, with more than 100 recording credits for artists including Harry Connick Jr., Terence Blanchard, Spike Lee, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. He also leads the acclaimed Uptown Jazz Orchestra. Riley is celebrated for blending New Orleans’ rich rhythmic traditions with modern jazz and has performed with Wynton Marsalis, Ahmad Jamal, George Benson, and Harry Connick Jr., while continuing to inspire new generations of musicians through his teaching.
