About the album, Leven shared, “LK99 is a reminder for me of what is real in my life. It’s so important to find the things for yourself that ground you and make you feel human. For me, that’s love, nature, water, breathing, spirituality, and finding God in whatever way it is. Being aware of those pillars in my life has held me down during a time when our humanity is being challenged. You have to protect yourself and remind yourself that you are real and human. That’s the energy that I was bringing into making this album.”
Thematically, LK99 resembles the grounding force and the anchor to hope when the world and, even, reality itself seem unstable. He grasps onto humanity by sharing raw truth and unfiltered emotions in these songs. At the same time, he imbues them with wisdom and strength for listeners to absorb. The number 9 holds special significance for Leven due to its frequent appearance in theology, science, and life itself. It represents a cycle coming to completion before starting over again at zero. For as much as LK99 bookends a previous chapter, it also ushers his artistry into a bright future.
The project also includes his recent single, “Remedy.” Beyond gaining steam on DSPs, it has received critical acclaim from the likes of Rolling Stone, which touted it among “All The Songs You Need To Know This Week.”
Leven teased this era with “BREATHE.” Rated R&B hailed it as “a funked-out floor-filler that toggles between motivational pep talk and sensual groove.” SoulBounce
It followed last year’s acclaimed LK99: The Prelude EP. Powered by fan favorites such as “Sleepwalking” and “Are U Still,” the latter has gathered millions of streams to date in addition to reeling in critical praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, Billboard, and more. Clash Magazine proclaimed, “The six-track collection is a kaleidoscopic jaunt through funk, RnB, rock and jazz – simultaneously referential but future-facing.” EARMILK raved, “A smoky, funkadelic-loving energy moulds beautifully with his lyrical search for solidarity in an alienated society, while echo-laden production gives his funky, neo-psychedelic sound a more potent presence.” Listen HERE.
