Detroit to honor music legend Amp Fiddler with street renaming ceremony
The City of Detroit, in collaboration with the Amp Fiddler Estate, proudly announces the official unveiling of “Amp Fiddler Ave”, to honor internationally acclaimed musician, producer, and mentor Joseph “Amp” Fiddler, a Detroit native whose groundbreaking contributions to music and culture have influenced artists and audiences worldwide.
The street naming ceremony will take place on Friday, May 16, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the corner of 7 Mile Road and Revere Street, marking a historic moment and formal recognition of Amp Fiddler Day in the City of Detroit.
Last year, the Detroit City Council formally inaugurated Amp Fiddler Day as an annual event on May 16. This initiative was formally authorized by the Council in a resolution sponsored by Council Member Scott Benson, who represents District 3—including the northeast neighborhood Fiddler long called home.
Amp Fiddler, affectionately known as a “legend’s legend,” has spent decades at the heart of the global music scene, shaping the sound of funk, soul, R&B, hip-hop, and beyond. His career includes collaborations with an iconic roster: George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, Prince, Maxwell, Seal, Tony Allen, Bootsy Collins, Raphael Saadiq, Jamiroquai, Moodymann, and many others.
His work as a solo artist and his signature sound—an irresistible blend of soul, groove, and innovation—have solidified his place among music’s most revered talents.
Beyond his own artistry, Fiddler’s greatest legacy may be his role as a mentor and catalyst for Detroit’s next generation of artists.
He famously taught and introduced JDilla to production tools and the industry, igniting a creative revolution that changed the trajectory of hip-hop and neo-soul music.
“Post-Motown, Amp Fiddler is the common thread connecting generations and genres,” said a spokesperson connected to the event.
“His spirit, generosity, and deep commitment to Detroit’s creative community have made him more than a musician—he’s a movement.” & “…for the past 30-plus years, one musician has beenthe red thread stitched through the sounds of this city: Joseph ‘Amp’ Fiddler.” – Mixmag 2018

This installation ensures that Amp Fiddler’s influence will be woven into the fabric of the city he loved, championed and his legacy will continue to inspire for generations to come.
The public is invited to join this historic celebration of a true musical visionary and hometown hero, whose legacy continues to inspire.
